Книжная полка доктора Ватсона
svetozar_chernov: Доктор Ватсон не только писал книги, иногда он еще и читать их был вынужден. Мы даже знаем, что у него была своя полочка, на которую он эти книги ставил. Что же там могло стоять?

Index в данном случае вполне можно перевести как "картотеку", имхо.... Почему бы Холмсу и не иметь упорядоченную картотеку, в дополнение к альбомам газетных вырезок...

Просто если посмотреть другие упоминания индекса в Каноне, то совершенно ясно, что индекс - это рукописная, надо полагать, книга, а не картотека: "You will find a few notes upon the matter under the heading B in my indexed list of cases."
